As an important language input skill,reading has always been concerned about for a long time by teachers and scholars.How to improve the students' reading scores and reading ability effectively has been an annoying question all the time.The traditional reading teaching can only make students get language points but not the discourse knowledge so that only some fragments of the text are gotten by the students instead of the discourse scheme structure.In the 1990 s,genre teaching approach,which applies genre analysis theory to the English reading teaching,is quite different from the traditional reading teaching.It helps the students construct the discourse structure and understand the reading materials from the aspect of the different genre knowledge,which is expected to play a very important part in improving the sores and ability of reading and the discourse competence.In this paper,the author attempts to apply the genre-based teaching approach to reading teaching so as to find an efficient reading teaching model to improve the reading competence.The research questions are as follows:1.Can genre-based teaching approach enhance the students' reading strategies?2.Can genre-based teaching approach improve junior school students' reading scores?The research applies quantitative and qualitative analysis.The subjects are 124 from Class 1 and Class 2 in Grade 9 in the Third Junior High School in Lingyuan in Liaoning province.This research lasts about 4 months from September,2016 to December,2016.And a questionnaire,pre-test,post-test and an interview are required in the experiment and then the SPSS 17.0 is used to analyze the related data.The research results manifest that students in the EC have improved reading comprehension scores after applying genre-based teaching approach.What is more,after training for 4 months,students' reading strategy is also improved.All in all,the findings from the current study imply that genre-based teaching approach has a positive influence on improving students' reading proficiency.There are numbers of shortcomings that are needed further study.But it is no doubt that the application of genre-based teaching approach is feasible and effective in English reading teaching in junior high school.
