Multimedia-assisted Instruction(MAI)has become an integral part of English teaching.However,in the context of MAI,there still exist some problems in English teaching in junior middle school.Thus,students' needs in learning English cannot be satisfied to some extent.Because of this,under the guidance of constructivism theory and scaffolding theory,this paper is mainly focused on the following two questions:First,what do junior middle school students need in learning English in the context of MAI? Second,what countermeasures should teachers employ to satisfy the students' needs?This paper mainly employs questionnaire and interview as the research methods.One hundred and fifty-eight students from Class Five and Class Seven in Grade Eight,and six English teachers are randomly chosen from Yifu Experimental Junior Middle School as research subjects.First of all,questionnaires are distributed to the students to investigate what the present situation of students' needs in learning English are like in the context of MAI.Then to some specific questions,certain teachers and students are interviewed for further information.Finally the survey results are collected and analyzed in the quantitative perspective while the results of interview are analyzed in the qualitative perspective.The investigated data and findings show that the students' needs in the context of MAI are reflected in the following three aspects.Firstly,students need richer and more comprehensive teaching content can be provided by the way of MAI.Secondly,students need the design and use of multimedia courseware can play the role of scaffolding to provide them more language input and output opportunities.Thirdly,students need more chances for communication.They do not like following the multimedia courseware mechanically.Instead,they prefer to participate in more interactive activities,through which they can exchange their ideas and exercise their imagination under the multimedia effects like images,sound,animation and other multimedia forms.In accordance with the results of the investigation and the analysis on the students' needs,the paper finds out that it is English teachers who should take some countermeasures to meet students' needs in learning English in the context of MAI.To be specific,firstly,teaching materials should be integrated based on the teaching objectives and students' needs.Meanwhile,richer content should be presented through various multimedia forms so as to stimulate students' interest in learning English.Secondly,teachers should design optimized multimedia courseware to offer students scaffolding in language input and output.Lastly,multimedia information input should provide students with an authentic context closely related to their real life to meet students' needs for communication.In a word,the study aims to fully play the role of MAI to facilitate students' English learning so as to enhance the efficiency of MAI through analyzing junior middle school students' needs in learning English and exploring countermeasures to meet their needs in the context of MAI.
