As time goes by,the number of rural senior high school is decreasing due to the development of economy.However,such kind of schools does exist in rural areas of China.As an English teacher from rural senior high school,the author finds that reading obstacles have a negative effect on English learning process of those students.So the author decided to do a research in Shanxian No.5 Middle School,a rural senior high school where I work: what are the English reading obstacles the students met? Why are there so many obstacles? And what are the countermeasures for them?According to the Curriculum Standards for Common Senior High School,the senior students need to develop themselves in language skills,language knowledge,emotion,learning strategies and cultural knowledge.The author made a research about the reading obstacles,involved some teachers and students from Shanxian No.5 Middle School,using literatures,questionnaires,classroom observations and interviews.There are ten teachers and three hundred students who did a favor during the whole research,which I’d appreciate very much.After the research,the author made use of the software SPSS19.0 to analyze these data which came from the questionnaires.Finally,the author got the obstacles the students met in English reading,based on the questionnaires analysis.Those obstacles contain the shortage of vocabulary,grammar,background knowledge,reading skills,harmful reading habits and low reading efficiency.This research is based on constructivism theory.Having taken the English reading classes,teachers and students into account,the author tried her best to make some countermeasures according to the obstacles above.First,make good use of English reading class;provide some simple exercises with students,help the students with developing good reading strategies.Second,the teachers need change the attitudes to the entrance examination which is not the most important thing for senior students;take into account of the various factors of the students including background knowledge,ages and the levels of learning to find out proper teaching materials.The teachers should learn about the students and offer them some reading skills and strategies.Finally,the students need right motivation for reading and form good reading habits.At the same time,they have to recite classic papers and do lots of English reading exercises.The author hopes that the research is useful to English teaching in rural senior high school and helpful in improving the students’ reading ability.Meanwhile,more and more people would be attracted and could pay attention to the problems which have been existing for a long time of English teaching in rural senior high schools. |
