English Curriculum for Senior High Schools stresses clearly that the development of student’s reading ability should be laid more emphasis than listening, speaking, and writing.The reason why English reading teaching becomes the core of English teaching in senior high school is not only that reading is of great importance in improving students’ comprehensive language competence, but also that English reading plays a decisive role in National College Entrance Examination. Therefore, both students and teachers in senior schools devote much time and energy to English reading, however, we still find in teaching that many students have many obstacles in reading, such as limited vocabulary, misunderstanding the article without new words, reading word by word, limited background knowledge, not knowing how to use reading strategies and so on. These obstacles affect senior students’ reading efficiency, and their current reading level is not equivalent to the required ability of National College Entrance Examination and English Curriculum. If the devotion does not match learning outcomes for a long time, some students will lose interest in English and English reading, lack confidence to reading, and even give up. All these needs teachers to find out the obstacles and solutions to help students overcome these troubles, help them form good reading habits and positive attitude, get joy and high marks in the examination at the same time, enrich their language and cultural knowledge to promote their comprehensive language competence.Based on the previous researches, this paper summarizes literature review, introduces the reasons, the methods and significance of the study, defines its corn concepts, and gives the theoretical base of this study. This paper applies questionnaire methods to help analyze the reading obstacles of senior high school students, find out the reasons of the obstacles, give the solutions to these obstacles to improve their reading ability. |
