Under the present educational system, influenced by our country's universal teaching model and the average teaching level, most students still can hardly balance the different abilities of English. Most students at different levels, especially the average students and the poor ones who keep an indifferent passion in English learning, get a series of problems on the use of foreign language and have barriers in practical communicative competence. However,a real master of a language is judged from various aspects and the premises are the learners' interest and passion. In addition, the language is a system used for communication, which English is born for.Systematically, language is a tool for communication;communication can be divided into two dimensions—verbal communication and nonverbal communication; These two aspects are opposite,on the other hand they are united, which can be unified to construct a two-way ongoing process of sending and receiving messages to achieve the communicative function of a certain language. Therefore,in order to improve the present situation of foreign language learning and further realize the communicative function of a language, the author standing on the problems which appear in the reality of English teaching in middle school, tries to find out an effective teaching method mainly from body language and paralanguage aspects of the nonverbal behavior.Consequently,a research with an application of nonverbal communication behavior in this paper is conducted to find a feasible and effective teaching method to balance the learners' basic English abilities, arouse student's English learning passion and improve their English learning state, and in the meantime enhance their English communicative competence. This thesis aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What positive influences does the application of nonverbal behaviors have on students' English learning? And what can be considered as the obvious effect of this method?(2)What kind of students would be influenced most by the application of nonverbal behaviors in teaching procedure? The subjects of the research are 80 students from two classes—Class One and Class Two—in Grade Nine of the First Junior Middle School of Liu Guang Town.Class one is taken as the experimental class intentionally taught with the application of nonverbal behavior and Class two as the controlled class taught by traditional teaching method with little use of nonverbal behaviors. The results proves that a good use of the nonverbal behavior with the traditional teaching method in English class can arouse students' interest in English and improve students' English learning state, significantly increase students' academic achievements, and on the other hand can make up for students' deficiency in communicative competence to a certain degree. The obvious effect of this method can be regarded as the arouse of interest and a narrowing of students' English level gap.Besides,an important factor of such a “narrowing”is basically attributed to an obvious improvement in the interest and learning state of the average students and the poor students. Therefore the application of the nonverbal behavior together with verbal teaching in middle school English class is feasible and effective.
