Reading is one of the most significant ways to acquire knowledge and master language skills.Reading teaching is always the priority of priorities of English teaching in senior high school.In recent years,for its purpose is to explore how to improve students' reading ability and how to help them use effective reading strategies,genre-based teaching approach has drawn more and more educators' attention.Based on genre analysis,genre-based teaching approach aims to apply the theories of genre and genre analysis into classroom teaching practice revolving around the schematic structure of the discourse.During the teaching process,it advocates that students should be guided to gain genre knowledge according to the macro-structure,communicative purposes and language features of the discourse so as to cultivate their genre awareness and enhance their reading confidence.Since 1980s,this approach has received lots of attention and instruction from linguists and educators abroad,and gradually becomes a popular topic.It has produced positive impacts on English teaching in some areas around the world.Scholars at home have conducted a series of preliminary explorations in recent years,mostly in the field of college English writing and reading teaching,non-English-major writing teaching,reading and writing teaching for English test system or English writing teaching in Senior High School.However,further explorations are still inadequate in the field of studying reading teaching in senior high school.Therefore,the writer during her internship,decided to conduct this experiment in two classes(Experimental Class and Control Class,77 students in total)in Baofeng Hongxing Senior High School,Henan province,for the purpose of exploring the application and impacts of genre-based approach on English reading teaching in senior high school.The four months'experiment aims to answer the following questions:1)How does genre-based teaching approach enhance their genre cognitive ability?2)How does genre-based teaching approach help students form good reading habits and use reading strategies?3)How does genre-based teaching approach help students improve their reading ability,especially in comprehension level?The paper firstly reviews previous studies of genre-based teaching approach in English reading teaching,introduces the theoretical framework of this research and then studies the impacts of this approach on English reading teaching in senior high school through designing specific teaching procedures,reading tests,interviews and questionnaires.The statistic demonstrates:Through the interpretation of different genres and corresponding drills,students' genre awareness is cultivated and their genre cognitive ability is enhanced;Genre-based approach advocates that there are regulations to follow when reading,which helps students form good reading habits and effectively use reading strategies;Genre-based approach guides students to consciously use genre knowledge to analyze the discourses so as to help them find out the main ideas,grasp the discourse structures,understand the writing intention and finally improve their reading ability.Genre-based teaching approach provides a new idea for English reading teaching.The study provides sound evidence that this approach can be effectively applied in English reading teaching in senior high school to improve students' reading competence.
