The paper mainly reports on a study of applying the Cooperative Principle into the English listening and speaking class of senior high, which tries to give some implications of listening and speaking teaching. The subject of the research was senior two students studying in a municipal key middle school in Tianjin. Students were asked to finish a pre-questionnaire at the beginning of the term which aimed to test their listening comprehension competence. Then, the author made an instructional design which tried to apply the Cooperative Principle into the listening and speaking class. Finally, students were asked to finish a post-questionnaire which aimed to identify the effectiveness of the application. Moreover, a class observation and interview were done which aimed to evaluate the instructional design. The results showed that the accuracy of the listening comprehension was improved after the application of the Cooperative Principle. However, students had difficulties in understanding the maxim of quality and the application of the pragmatics needs a long way to go. The knowledge of pragmatics should be closely combined with English listening and speaking. From the class observation and interview, most of the students were fond of the new way of teaching listening and speaking. Their interests could be aroused and they were more active than before in the listening and speaking class. More students were involved in the class as well.Nevertheless, the Cooperative Principle will be better understood if teacher adds more Chinese explanations and examples or simplify the difficult words. In conclusion, although the application improved students' listening and speaking competence more or less, there are still some imperfections of the study.More researches are expected to be done in the future in order to improve students'listening and speaking competence based on the knowledge of pragmatics.
