Since the traditional English reading teaching pays too much attention to grammar and language points, which lacks of discourse consciousness and reading competence cultivation, the author tries to explore the effective English reading teaching model based on discourse analysis for the aim of improving students'reading competence.The study is based on the discourse analysis and analyzed some factors of the instructional design and picked up one class in Grade Seven in Meijiang Middle School, carrying out the classroom observation to get a better understanding of the students. Then, the author designed the instructional design for Grade Seven students:Module 5 My school day Unit 2 We start work at nine o 'clock. The author made the instructional design into practice to test the application and the effect of using discourse analysis of English reading teaching. The author is based on the performance of the students in the class,the supervisor's suggestions,the interviews'situation, the questionnaires of the students after the class and the author's self-reflection to analyze the meaning and effectiveness of this class. The result suggested that the application of discourse analysis in the English reading teaching can help students analyze the main idea and the structure of the passage quickly. It can also improve students' integrative competence to analyze the passage and enhance their logical thinking. All in all,the students' reading competence can be improved gradually.
