As a famous Chinese sociologist, L.K. Tao had made a founding contribution to the development of Chinese sociology. L.K. Tao was the representative figure of Chinese sociologists of first generation. He was the epitome of Chinese sociologists who in the Republic era of special situation tried to change the backward status and save the Chinese society of the particular context through the knowledge and methods of sociology. In a certain sense, all of the theories and ideas in the Republic era are the response to modernity. The core topic is whether China needs modernization and how to achieve it. The paper argues that,in order to realize the final goal---the modernization of state, society and individuals, L.K Tao takes "the inter-construction between modern society and individuals" as the theoretical paradigm, explores the modern rebuilding of the traditional society and individuals by reflecting on the basic sociological subject of society and individuals, constructing social theories, and analyzing the problems of social investigations.Taking L.K. Tao's concern and discussion of "how to build the modern society and modern individuals" as the main line, the paper expounds L.K. Tao's thought about the way and the specific approach of modern Chinese society and modern Chinese by making a comparative analysis between "abstract society and individual, modern western society and individual, the society and individual in the Republic of China" three dimensions. At the level of general social theory, the L.K. Tao's exposition about social development and individual development relationship based on the presupposition of social evolution, and his discussion of "Three levels of social and individual relationships" are summarized. At the level of ideal, L.K. Tao's thoughts about the modern characteristics of western society and the western individual is synthesized, regarding it as the goal of China's modernization. At the level of reality, L.K. Tao's description about the social situation of the Republic of China through the investigation and the analysis of the underdeveloped problems of the individual in the society of the Republic of China are discussed. Finally, under L.K. Tao's presupposition of "relationship between individual and society",L.K.Tao's means and methods to achieving the goal of shaping the social order and the modern person are deeply excavated by hooking his thought about the reform of education, the direction and principle of social evolution and the path of comprehensive social reform.
