When the Republic of China encountered an unprecedented turbulent situation, saving the nation from extinction and struggling for survival became the leading concept of the elitist stratum at that time. Through making a contrast between the developmental process of China and that of foreign society, people gradually recognized that modern society is the direction and objective of getting rid of the tradition and going into the future. As a sociologist of the first generation in China, Chen Da made a deep investigation into the society of China in terms of population and a great contribution to the indigenization of Chinese sociology. This paper mainly reorganizes the social theories, theories of social research and methods system of China and Occident, and makes an investigation into the texts and social research of Chen Da. It turns out that, Chen Da recognized that China, like the Occidental society, would also experience the social transformation from traditional to modern society. After analyzing the internal relationships between social formation and the characteristic of population, between social competition and the number of population, between social integration and the quality of population, and between social transformation and the action of population, Chen Da constructed the competition theory of "Society-Population",which revealed the connection between "struggle for survival", "competition of achievements" and the construction of modern society of China through analyzing the interaction of social competition and population competition.
