In the 21st century when great changes are always taking place every day,English is increasingly becoming an important language.Of all the four skills,which includes listening,speaking,reading and writing,reading is generally believed to be the most important.As a primary means of language output,teaching reading has become an integrated part of current English teaching in China.Therefore,students and teachers have made sufficient efforts into reading,although the result is not so satisfactory.But luckily,numerous recent researches have proved that English reading strategy training is very helpful in promoting students' reading ability,leading to an increase in their English test grades.But due to the increasing difficulty level of English in senior high school and burden of study,more and more students begin to have problems learning English.One special group,named "English underachievers",have been brought into focus now.They have a weak foundation in English,unable to meet the requirement of English curriculum.Besides,they often lack confidence and passively participate in the English learning.So it is natural that their English results be worsening all the time.Due to the above facts,the author intends to provide strategy training for senior 1 English underachievers aimed at improving their test results.First of all,the author provides a questionnaire for all students,including the English underachievers.By collecting and analyzing data,the author has found out the reading strategies in which English underachievers are weak.On basis of this,a thorough plan has been made.To prove the effectiveness of the reading strategies,the author has divided students into two groups:experimental and control group.Students in the experimental group were trained for 15 weeks in the reading strategies while those in the control group learned English texts in a traditional way.Before and after class,students were given English comprehension tests and T tests in SPSS 22 to justify the effectiveness of English reading strategies training.The research indicates that a period of English strategy training can improve students' awareness of using English strategies,thus improving their English reading results,which has proved the author's assumption.
