Today, more and more countries are paying attention to the development of sports industry, sports industry has gradually become a sunrise industry all over the world. In Western developed countries, sports industry is regarded as one of the driving forces of national economic growth and makes great contribution to the national economy. In contrast,China's sports industry makes related low share of the national economy, showing a significant regional characteristic. To balance the developmentof sports industry in different regions, comprehensive assessment of the competitiveness of the sports industry is required to understand the internal specific characteristics. Therefore, the study on the competitiveness of regional sports industry cannot only existson the logic analysis, expert interviews and so on,more scientific and efficient statistical analysis methods is needed to study the development of sports industry and to make clear the competitiveness and regional advantages. This paper combines the principle of selection and index selection of Porter's diamonds. After referencing from a large amount of literature, this paper summarizes and establishes the index system of comprehensive evaluation, and makes extensive analysis of 31 provinces(municipalities and autonomous regions)in China. The purpose is to fully understand the development of competitiveness of regional sports industry.Generally, most of the research on the competitiveness of sports industry concentrates on only one kind of evaluation method. In this paper, the competitiveness of sports industry in China is reflected by cluster analysis and factor analysis from all aspects to reveal the difference in different provinces.Firstly, the principal component-cluster analysis method is adopted on the basis of the traditional clustering method, and the whole regional division of our country is carried out. Then, the first four common factors of regional sports industry competitiveness, namely industrial development factor, industrial consumption factor, related industry and facility factor and industrial input factor, were determined by the factor analysis method, and 31 provinces were ranked by calculating every factor score.Specifically analyzing the advantages and disadvantages from the internal characteristics. Finally,by summarizing the two empirical methods,China's regional sports industry is divided into four categories:the first is the most competitive region(Beijing,Shanghai),the second is the second competitive area(Guangdong,Zhejiang,Jiangsu,Shandong). The third category is the third competitive(Hebei,Henan,Sichuan,Liaoning,Hubei,Hunan,Heilongjiang,Fujian). The remaining of provinces are considered as the uncompetitive(Tianjin,Inner Mongolia,Chongqing,Qinghai,Ningxia,Guangxi,Yunnan,Shanxi,Jiangxi,Shaanxi,Anhui,Jilin,Xinjiang,Tibet,Hainan,Guizhou,Gansu). And making suggestions for the different regions in terms of competitiveness of sports industry.
