Formative assessment emphasizes teaching process and provides students with active, rapid and specific feedbacks so that both students and teachers can get feedbacks in the interaction of teaching;teaching can be improved continuously and learning method can be adjusted instead of only excessively focusing on the evaluation results. With reference to the relevant materials, the author finds that there are so many articles on the research of the relationship between formative assessment and motivation, but almost none of them are concerned about the impact that formative assessment has on students' motivation in junior middle school in rural areas. This is a teaching experimental research, which is designed to explore the influence of formative assessment on students' learning motivation through a semester's teaching experiments. The comparative experiment chooses two classes in the seventh grade taught by the same English teacher, with one class as the control class and the other as the experiment class. In the process of the experiment, the author designs the experiment procedure based on the theory of formative assessment and collects the experiment data through questionnaires, class observation, interview, etc. Therefore, conclusion can be drawn, through the analysis of the experimental data, class observation and interviews, that the experiment proves that formative assessment does help a lot for both teachers and students. For teachers,it helps them arouse students' enthusiasm for learning and organize students to take part in English teaching activities more effectively;for students,it provides them with more feedbacks and guidance which promote their English learning motivation.
