Cultivating students' reading ability is an important goal of high school English teaching in China,which is also the tested point of language competence.In the traditional English reading teaching,teachers always spend lots of time interpreting language points and students constantly take notes.Therefore,students rarely have the opportunity to participate in classroom and do not have enough time for English reading training.The traditional reading teaching pays much attention to language forms,neglects the significance of the language,the teachers' teaching is dominant,students are passive recipients,which is unfavorable to cultivate students' reading interest and improve students' reading ability.In the mid 1990 s,a large number of language workers introduced the task-based language teaching method into our country.Task-based language teaching is a teaching strategy to promote the development of students,which aims to cultivate and develop students' subjectivity.Task-based language teaching method emphasizes student-centered,advocates “learning by doing,” in which students are engaged in learning through participating in communicative activities and accomplishing language learning tasks together with their teachers.It arouses students' internal demand and develops students' interest in learning English.Based on the research of predecessors' theory,using the method of empirical research,this thesis analyzed and compared the traditional teaching method and task-based language teaching method to study the application of task-based language teaching in English reading of senior high schools.The following questions were solved in this study:(1)Can TBLT improve students' English reading competence more effectively than the traditional teaching method?(2)Is TBLT more helpful to inspire students' English reading interest than the traditional teaching method?(3)In the process of English reading teaching of senior high schools,what are the differences between TBLT and the traditional teaching method? The author did the research with 103 students who are from different classes in Grade two of Weng An NO.2 Senior High school in Gui Zhou province.Class five in Grade two is chosen as the experimental class,which carried out the task-based language teaching approach in English reading teaching.Class six in Grade two is chosen as the control class,which adopted the traditional teaching method in English reading teaching.All subjects received the pre-test,post-test,and two questionnaires before the experiment and after the experiment.The experimental results showed that the application of the task-based language teaching in English reading of senior high schools can effectively improve students' English reading ability and which is helpful to develop students' interest in English reading.
