Portfolio assessment,which focuses on students' self-directed learning and self-reflection ability,attaches great importance to students individual difference and personal and all-round growth,is an assessment for process as well as students' learning outcome.In the recent year,with the further deepening of New Curriculum Reform in China,more and more schools start to employ portfolio assessment as school-based assessment for students' achievement.The present study,which takes all the English teachers,some students and their parents from the primary school attached to Xi'an A school as the participants,tries to investigate through questionnaires and interviews their understanding,attitudes,feedback on the effect of English portfolio assessment from teachers,students and parents respectively;the contents of portfolio assessment,category and management towards portfolio assessment.Meanwhile,through case study,the study finds out some problems concerning the implementation of portfolio assessment and puts forward some related strategies for improvement and application.English portfolio assessment in this school which is still under experiment faces the following problems: 1.There is still some room for improvement for the English teachers and parents on their poor theoretical knowledge on portfolio assessment.2.Teachers have positive attitude to portfolio assessment,but it is difficult to maintain;3.The feedback of portfolio assessment is good,but there are significant differences;4.The portfolio assessment is complicated,which aggravates the burden of teachers;5.The portfolio assessment is lack of the unified management,communication andtraining between teachers and parents are not timely.Based on the analysis of the problems,the study puts forward some strategies for improvement for portfolio assessment.First,teachers and parents should be encouraged to have a close study on the theories and training on portfolio assessment.Secondly,teachers should correct the attitude of portfolio assessment,and improve the efficiency of evaluation.Thirdly,students be given more freedom to choose items and contents for their portfolio;Fourth,parents' participation should be strengthened through communicative approach;Fifth,School should increase the professional and establish a unified management system.
