Our country is a unified nation which is multinational,multi-language and multicultural.There are 24 nationalities having their native languages and characters among the 55 minorities.Each ethnic group’s language and character are formed through ages of efforts,which are the most representative things.Therefore,placing emphasis and taking some protective measures on each nationality’s language and character is an important way to protect our country’s diversity in terms of nationality including culture.So,minority bilingual education is an effective way to fulfill this and it forms an important part of our country’s nationality education.It is not only a way to save and inherit minority languages and characters,but also a good way to enhance the overall quality of ethnic groups including their verbal ability.Yi nationality is one of the nationalities that have their particular languages and characters.As one of the biggest places where the majority of Yi people live in,Sichuan Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture implements Yi-Chinese bilingual education in order to enhance the overall quality of Yi people and inherit its native language and character.which not only improves the overall educational level of Liangshan Yi nationality but also trains many talented people who can contribute to the development of politics,economics and culture.So,Yi-Chinese bilingual education is known as “southwest pattern” which is one of the patterns in minority bilingual education.To achieve its goal –namely “Yi-Chinese Jiantong”(a good command of both Yi and Chinese),Liangshan Yi-Chinese bilingual education has two different models namely the 1st model and the 2nd model.They differ from each other in terms of the medium of instruction.In terms of the 2nd model to which an extra course named Yi verbal course is added,the other courses are given in Chinese.So,the quality of Yi verbal education has effects on the goal of Yi-Chinese bilingual education.Obviously,itis worthwhile to have a deep investigation on the current status quo of the 2nd model of Yi verbal education.This study have in-depth survey and description on the 2nd model used in middle school with respect to its teaching conditions,processes and results by using questionnaires,interviewing and observational methods.It uncovers the current problems,analyzes the underlying reasons and puts forward some practical countermeasures.This study consists of five parts showed as follows:The first part is an introduction.It briefly describes the motivation of this research,analyzes the relevant studies,pinpoints the value of this study and gives definitions to some concepts.It also describes its research design,implication including important and difficult issues.The second part gives an overview of Liangshan Yi-Chinese bilingual education,which contains its policy context and information on its overall development.The third part scrutinizes the current status quo of the 2nd model of Yi-Chinese bilingual education.It first gives a description to investigation methods,tools,subjects and questionnaires.Based on data analysis,it gives introduction to its teaching conditions,processes and results followed separate analysis of statistical charts.The fourth part mainly generalizes the current problems of the 2nd model of Yi-Chinese bilingual education and the underlying reasons.Based on analysis given in part three,this part generally introduces the major problems followed relevant analysis on their underlying reasons.In terms of teaching condition,it is lack of adequate teachers,appropriate textbooks,etc.As for teaching process,teachers are lack of explicit teaching goals,serious teaching attitude,and abundant teaching methods and so on.With respect to the teaching results of Yi verbal education,it is short of positive overall effects.We analyze the underlying reasons and find that the support from government is not adequate,the officials place low emphasis on students’ grades,etc.The fifth part suggests some effective countermeasures aiming at improving the quality of the 2nd model of Yi-Chinese bilingual education.In details: first,the government should place high emphasis on Yi verbal teaching;second,teachers should be trained to be professionals;third,teachers should notice the importance of self-development;fourth,the editors should combine the adaptation of textbooks to nationality;fifth,sufficient class hour should be given;sixth,the school should build scientific evaluative system of Yi verbal teaching.
