This paper investigates “social reception of the new literature” on 90 Middle school Chinese text books which published in the Republican period(1920-1949).As one of the media of "the new literature",text book is more important than the others,such as the magazine,newspaper supplement,because of its large quantity of printing and wide audience.it can help us to learn more about the social reception of " the new literature".We adopt the method of text interpretation and data statistics to analyze the 90 sets of middle school Chinese teaching material,trying to provide more objective data for the Chinese modern literature research,we also hope it can contribute to correct the deviation of the previous studies because of the shortage of samples.To be specific,the method of text interpretation,for example the interpretation of the choreography style,exercise can present the situation of the new literature and its function.The method of data statistics is used to study the change of its function and the causes.All of this will help researchers to have more comprehensive and accurate view on the new literature about its real situation in secondary school education,and thus infer its effect on the basis of this paper.We find that the new literature had three major functions :the social cognition education,the ideological morals education and the aesthetic education.In general,the three major functions were in a tripartite balance.But pecking order appeared as long as the development of the society and the change of the education policies that are determinants for edition.specifically,the social cognition education was prevailing in the 1920's,lots of literary which contained social issues had been selected because of the revolution of ethics morals.In the 1930's,the ideological morals education was leading just as the occurrence of a series of Japanese invading events.There were plenty of new literature that voiced patriotic sentiment in text books."the Four Principles and Eight Virtues " proposed by Chiang Kai-shek also was good for the ideological morals education.There would be a bloom for the aesthetic education between the last years of the 1920's and the early years of the 1930's.Because The temporary curriculum standard published in 1929 was beneficial for it.But it hadn't been brought to the forefront as The formal curriculum standard came,it didn't hold dominant position in the Republic.
