Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore body balance under different inclining conditions with the Star Excursion Balance Test(SEBT),and to evaluate lower extremity motion quality through tortuosity. It hypothesized the change of incline would influence the biomechanics of lower limbs. It was an innovation to apply the tortuosity as a new measurement technique to the lower limbs judgment, even the biomechanical study. Methods: 20 healthy young males volunteered to participate in the test.A Six-degree-freedom Motion Platform was used to set the inclines as:-5°,0°,5°,10°.A Vicon three-dimension motion analysis system was used to capture spatiotemporal parameters and three-dimensional coordinates of markers. Results: In the anterior direction,as downhill,the-5° showed significantly smaller SEBT performance than 0°(p<0.05),but the-5°showed significantly larger knee tortuosity than 0°;as uphill, hip and knee tortuosity increased with the increase of inclines.Tortuosity could provide influences of different inclines during the Star Excursion Balance Test. Conclusion: As uphill, inclination had no significant impact on body balance, while tortuosity of hip and knee increased as inclination increasing. As downhill, body balance decreased, and tortuosity of knee shown to be larger. In addition, downhill showed lower balance ability than uphill.Hip and knee joints should be protected because of the significant changes during the experiment.Tortuosity could provide nuance of joints in activities and it could be used to analysis composition actions.
