With the continuous deepening of the new curriculum reform,the state attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' ability.And the English class should not only teach the theoretical knowledge of English,but also pay attention to the cultivation of students' ability.Among them,critical thinking ability becomes the focus of attention.The Ministry of Education issued the "English curriculum standards for senior high school(Experiment)"(2003)for critical thinking ability of high school students to make a clear request:senior high school English teaching should focus on cultivating students' ability to analyze and solve problems in English and critical thinking ability.Therefore,it is urgent to cultivate students' critical thinking in senior high school.This study focuses on cultivating students' critical thinking ability in senior high school English classroom teaching,at the same time improving their critical thinking ability,strengthening their logic and critical thinking consciousness.In this way,we can improve the quality of English teaching in senior high school,optimize the structure of English teaching,and promote the all-round development of students.The author took 98 senior three students of Sanya No.Six Senior high school in Hainan Province as the objects of the study,and carried on the investigation about one semester,and mainly studied the following two issues:(1)What's the present situation of senior high school students' critical thinking ability?What is the cause of this situation?(2)How to cultivate high school students' critical thinking ability in English class?In order to make the results more reliable,this study adopts the method of literature research,questionnaire survey,interview and statistical analysis.On the basis of data analysis,Excel software is used to analyze the data.The results show that:(1)Senior three students have a weak inclination towards critical thinking dispositions,but a strong inclination subscales of analyticity and inquisitiveness.(2)There are many reasons for the lack of students' critical thinking ability,including internal factors and external factors.(3)English classroom teaching can improve the students' critical thinking.According to the results of the survey,the author puts forward some suggestions:The education department should consider the multidimensional training model of critical thinking ability.Students should strengthen self-cultivation by arousing students' interests,cultivating the curiosity and the self-confidence,enhancing learning motivation,developing questioning and innovative spirit.Teachers should improve their own critical thinking ability,establish new teaching philosophy and apply flexible and diversified teaching methods,and schools should create a good learning environment for students to promote their critical thinking ability.
