The new curriculum emphasizes the development of every individual learner, and the homework should have the function of further extension and development on learners’ knowledge, skill and ability. Therefore, the problem of the development of slow students and the problem of homework design have always been the concerns of English educators. The author of this thesis intends to study the effects of English homework design on the learning behavior of slow students. This paper starts with the research background, which includes a detailed description of the present research situation and the researches on the status of the slow students at home and abroad. With as its base theories Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Zone of Proximal Development, this paper discusses the implementation of homework design and evaluation for slow students.A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the current situation of English homework and the needs of slow students.Based on the analysis of the amount of homework, the difficulty of homework, the content of homework and the evaluation of homework, the author summed up the principles of homework design suitable for students with special needs. On the basis of these principles, the author employed the integrated research methods of a teaching experiment, two questionnaires and post-research interviews. The subjects of this study are 15 slow students in Class 4,Grade 7,and 15 slow students in Class 5,Grade 7.This research aims to find out(1)what are the needs of slow students in doing their homework?(2)what are the changes in the learning behavior of slow students after the experiment?(3)what are the attitudes of slow students to the design of needs-based homework? The study found that slow students had difficulties in completing their homework, such as the high difficulty level, the amount of homework, and emotional stress on the teacher’s demand for homework correction.Throughout the implementation of the new homework design, most of the slow students have increased their enthusiasm for study and improved their knowledge accumulation. They think positively in class and actively participate in group activities. The rate of their homework completion and work accuracy has been improved and their confidence has been increased.Slow students are almost certain about the needs-based design of homework. This research has found several implications for both teachers and students, and we hope it will be helpful to those who have an interest in this area.
