New English Curricular Standards in the Phase of Compulsory Education and New Teacher Education Standard issued by Ministry of National Education Department in 2011 updated the educational ideas and requirements for primary school English teachers.Higher requests are brought forward to primary school English teachers with the development of curriculum reform and quality education.In order to meet these requests,a high-quality team of primary school English teachers is needed.Theoretically,primary school English teacher's professional qualities are the radical indemnification of English teaching in primary schools and English enlightening of pupils.Thus,a research on English teachers' professional qualities will be beneficial to English teaching and has practical value.By using questionnaire method and class observation,the author surveyed 85(5 males and 80 females)primary school English teachers in Penglai.The author tries to answer the following questions in this study:(1)What is the present situation of the professional qualities of primary school English teachers in Penglai?(2)What causes the present situation of primary school English teachers?(3)What strategies can be used to improve the professional qualities of primary school English teachers in Penglai?Based on statistical analysis,the main findings are as follows:(1)Although the overall level of primary school English teachers' professional qualities in Penglai is comparatively good and teachers' professional knowledge and professional skills have got improvement,most teachers are lack of theoretical knowledge of foreign language and the guidance of experts or researchers,which causes that teachers are lack of motivation and autonomy to develop;(2)Causes for the present situation of primary school English teachers professional qualities in Penglai can be divided into two parts: school and social factors,teachers' factors;(3)Strategies to improve the professional qualities are analyzed from three different parts: the teachers' part,the part of school and the part of society.
