With the development of the basic education reform,primary school teachers play an important role as important participants in the basic education reform and the teachers' qualities affect the efficiency of teaching directly.Primary school English teachers are the key factors to promote the success of primary school English curriculum,and they shoulder the important task of enlightening and laying the foundation for lifelong English learning for students.Primary school English teachers' professional qualities also influence the English teaching.So the English teachers' professional qualities in rural primary school are the key to the English teaching quality.They also affect the process of educational reform and effect.This study aims to make an investigation on the English teachers' professional qualities in rural primary schools,in which the questionnaire and interview are adopted as the main research instruments.This study conducted a questionnaire survey of 120 rural primary school English teachers,and randomly conducted a semi-structured interview with 25 teachers among them.In the light of the collected data,the following research questions are addressed.(1)What is the current status of English teachers' professional qualities in rural primary schools?(2)What factors influence the improvement of professional qualities of English teachers' in rural primary schools?(3)What are the needs of the teachers to improve their professional qualities in rural primary schools?The results show that(1)some English teachers in rural primary school are transferred from other subjects;the qualities of English teachers are uneven.(2)There are some factors which affect the development of English teachers' professional qualities: the non-standard employment access system,the lack of enough external support,negative attitude toward self-improvement,and the unicity of teachers' training system.(3)Most of the teachers realize that they have some deficiencies in their professional qualities,and wish to have them improved.They want to develop their English professional knowledge and English teaching ability,renew their concepts to adapt to the new requirements of new curriculum reform;they also hope school and relevant administrative departments of education can provide strong support for their professional qualities.Based on the above finding,some related suggestions for the qualities improvement of English teachers in rural primary school are as follows:(1)English teachers should establish professional ideals and firm beliefs of teachers,develop students' language skills,and improve scientific and artistic teaching methods,establish a reasonable expectation for basic English education,strive to improve their professional qualities,and cultivate a variety of interests to maintain and improve the psychological quality of teachers.(2)The schools need to organize more school-based trainings and increase the investment to promote teachers' development,cooperate with the relevant educational departments and organize a series of training programs at the same time.(3)The government should broaden the recruiting channels of teachers and enrich the source of teaching stuff,devote great efforts in training and improving teachers' professional qualities,explore diverse training modes and innovate training methods,solve the contradictions in the quality development of the teachers effectively and implement the certificate system of rural primary English teachers gradually.
