Questioning is an essential and vital part in the process of English teaching in junior high school.It is not difficult to find that a well-prepared English questioning will benefit a lot to promote and smooth the whole class.At the same time,with reforms and innovations moving on,English Subject Core Competencies has been put forward and discussed hotly.As described by National Standards for Senior English Course(2017),English Subject Core Competencies consist of four main aspects which are linguistic competence,cultural disposition,thinking quality and learning ability.English classroom teaching is a main method with which students' Core Competencies will be gained.Thus,English classroom questioning,a vital part in English classroom teaching,will determine or at least influence a lot whether students' Core Competencies can be attained.In other words,effective English classroom questioning is of great significance to both teachers and students.In this paper,questionnaire and classroom observation are used to acquire the first hand material and data based on English classroom questioning that can be defined into many points.Meanwhile,the purpose of the research is to roughly find out the problems that exist in English classroom teaching,to present related strategies and then gradually to enhance the effectiveness of English classroom questioning to promote the cultivation of English Subject Core Competencies in junior high.When observing the English classroom questioning in junior high and collating the data from questionnaires,the author finds that there are such problems related to classroom questioning effectiveness as too much attention has been paid to language points rather than the cultivation of students' thinking quality,a number of questions have been taken into consideration while the quality of which has been ignored;too many questions are test-oriented,which means that questions are assigned to students to serve a high mark but not to serve the cultivation of English Subject Core Competencies in English class in junior high school.Under such circumstances,strategies to maximize questioning effectiveness in English class should be provided.Based the problems and causes of questioning in English classroom,the writer provides holistic and specific strategies to solve problems to promote the cultivation of English Subject Core Competencies.From the point of holistic strategies,teachers need to insist on the principle of effective teaching and teachers' professional development and English Subject Core Competencies.Meanwhile,such specific strategies as determining the purpose and questions related to questioning,predicting the problems that may be encountered,simplifying the questions and making use of words and phrases they are familiar with will be provided as well.
