At present,our educational reform emphasizes the importance of students' all-around development,of which the development of their subject core competencies is one of the most essential constituents.The core competencies are so much emphasized,simply because they are regarded as a person's key abilities to meet the social needs and to ensure his/her sustainable development in the society.Among all the subject core competencies,English core competencies play a very important role for the students' all-around development which includes linguistic competence,learning abilities,thinking quality and cultural disposition.Therefore,it is quite necessary to undertake researches from the perspective of English core competencies.Since English reading teaching occupies a quite important place in English teaching for junior school students,the questions of how English reading teaching is conducted,what problems exist according to the requirements of English core competencies,what strategies we should adopt to improve the effect of English reading teaching in junior high schools,would be discussed.In this study,the author of this thesis attempts to investigate and analyze these questions from the perspective of English core competencies by using the method of questionnaire,interview and classroom observation.And the research participants are the English teachers and students of Yantai Bilingual Experimental School.Through investigation,the author of this thesis finds out some questions existing in English reading teaching,for example,the English teachers pay more attention to the basic knowledge,but ignore the cultivation of ability;they do not lay much stress on students' cultural cultivation;they ignore the students' subject status;etc.All these problems are against the concepts of English core competencies.Therefore,during the English reading teaching,the English teachers are supposed to understand English core competencies completely and put them into effect.The teachers should also change their teaching methods to improve students' abilities and strengthen their cultural realization.Finally,the students' learning strategies should be improved.Only in this way can it make sure that the concepts of English core competencies can be put into effect.The author hopes that this study can work out some pedagogical suggestions to improve the present English reading teaching on the one hand,while on the other hand,it can help to promote the students' abilities for English learning and all-around development.
