With the rapid development of economy and the progress of the society,intercultural communication of people from different countries is more and more frequent.People with different cultural backgrounds realize that only understand the cultural connotations of each others' languages can they achieve successful intercultural communication.In Elementary Education Stage,the importance of cultivating students' intercultural communicative competence in English teaching is becoming more and more prominent.The Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard(2011 edition)explicitly proposed to cultivate students' intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence.In order to meet such a requirement,many experiments have been done in junior high school English teaching.This thesis is based on the relevant theories of intercultural communication and explores a new teaching model in combination with the Guided Discovery Method and Experiential Learning Theory in foreign language teaching.The purpose of the new teaching model,namely Exposure-Discovery-Application(EDA)model,aims to improve junior high school students' intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence.This experiment was conducted in two parallel classes randomly selected in a junior high school,one of which is the treatment group with 41 students,and the other is the control group with 40 students.And the whole experiment lasted about 14 weeks.Before the experiment,the intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence of the two classes were tested with the questionnaire and pretest papers.After the analysis with SPSS 17.0,no significant difference was found in intercultural communicative competence between the two classes,so there is basic condition for conducting the experiments.During the experiment,both classes were taught by the same teacher,the experimental group adopted the new teaching model,and the control group adopted the traditional teaching model.After the experiment,the author conducted the post-test of two classes' students' intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence.After analyzing the collected data with SPSS 17.0,the conclusion was drawn: the new teaching model proposed in this thesis is effective to improve junior high school students' intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence.Meanwhile,this thesis also points out that English teaching in junior high school should focuses on cultivating students' intercultural awareness and aims to cultivate students' intercultural communicative competence.
