The New English Curriculum Standards promote quality education and all-round development of the students and require that teachers should take into account the different levels of students.English teaching is not only to improve students' ability to use language but also to develop students' interest and confidence in learning English.However,the present reading teaching mode,emphasizing the explanation of vocabulary and the usage of grammar,ignores students' individual differences,with no improvement in their interest and reading comprehension.American psychologist Howard Gardner put forward the Multiple Intelligences theory.He holds that every person possesses at least eight kinds of intelligences.The theory stresses that teachers should take students' individual differences into consideration and cultivate students' intelligences by applying different teaching activities.Therefore,MI theory supplies a theoretical support for teachers to realize students'all-round development.The study is to apply MI theory to the teaching of English reading in senior high schools.Through analyzing the teaching practice,the author has found the importance of applying the theory of Multiple Intelligences to English reading teaching activities.The theory of Multiple Intelligences allows people a better understanding of the meaning of education.Based on the theory,teachers can design the corresponding class activities according to the characteristics of students' intelligence,which is very helpful for students' all-round development.The results show that reading teaching activities based on Multiple Intelligences can help students to achieve balanced development.The reading teaching activities under the guidance of Multiple Intelligences can effectively stimulate students' learning interest and motivation,mobilize students' enthusiasm and initiative as students participate in classroom with enthusiasm and their main body role in class is more obvious.Reading teaching mode based on the theory of Multiple Intelligences is more helpful to cultivating students' comprehensive language ability,including listening,speaking,reading and writing.Thus,the students have improved their English significantly.
