Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption(EPOC)has been defined as the additional oxygen consumption under the quiet state after high level of oxygen consumption in movement. With the increase in oxygen consumption after exercise, the body energy consumption has increased. Therefore,EPOC is an important factor that can not be neglected in the study of energy metabolism. At present,it is found in most of domestic and foreign studies that exercise intensity and duration are important factors affecting EPOC,but there are also studies suggested that the impact of the two factors on EPOC is limited. Objective:The aim of this study is to determine the effects of exercise intensity and exercise duration on EPOC.Methods:Nineteen young men aged 18-26 years old with no sports training history were recruited in this study. The maximal oxygen uptake(VO2max)of participants was measured by K4B2 portable cardiopulmonary function analyzer and treadmill firstly. Then the nineteen subjects were invited to come to the laboratory four time to complete four different jogging programs on treadmill including jogging at 60%VO2max for 30 minutes, jogging at 70%VO2max for 15 minutes, jogging at 70%VO2max for 30 minutes, and jogging at 80%VO2max for 15 minutes. The K4B2 portable cardiopulmonary function analyzer and polar H7 heart rate monitor were used to measure several physiological indigators of the subjects in pre-jogging,during jogging and post-jogging.The main indigators included oxygen uptake(ml ·kg-1·min-1),kilocalorie consumption(KCAL),heart rate(HR),rating of perceived exertion(RPE),respiratory quotient(RQ),et al.10 minutes,20 minutes and 30 minutes EPOC after exercise were calculated according to the test results,respectively.SPSS20.0 software was used for data analysis, and the differences of EPOC between different training programs were compared using paired t tests.Results:1)EPOC of 30 minutes(5479ml)after jogging at 70%VO2max for 15 minutes was lower than that of jogging at 80%VO2max for 15 minutes(7978.4ml),with significant difference(P<0.05);2)EPOC of 30 minutes(4046ml)after jogging at 60%VO2max for 30 minutes was lower than that of jogging at 70%V02max for 30 minutes(5409.4ml),with significant difference(P<0.05);3)There was no significant difference between EPOC of 30 minutes(5409.4ml)after jogging at 70%VO2max for 30 minutes and that of jogging at 70%VO2max for 15 minutes(5479ml)(P>0.05).Conclusion:It is found in this study that increased exercise int-ensity could lead to a significant increase in EPOC.However, the influence of exercise duration on EPOC is not significant.
