The effective English reading teaching mainly means that under the teachers' guidance,the students' reading skills has been improved and their emotional attitude towards foreign culture has been positively enhanced on the premise of respecting and understanding the native culture.Students' reading competence and the quality of reading teaching can be improved only if the reading teaching is effective.And as the key implementer of reading teaching,the importance of high school English teachers' understanding of effective reading teaching has been attracting increasing attention.Not only should teachers value reading teaching,they also have to know the way to teach English reading effectively.However,it is quite hard to see the systematic research on English teachers' understanding of effective reading teaching although more and more attention are paid to the significance of effective English reading teaching.Therefore,through questionnaires and interview(300 questionnaires are sent out,of which 292 ones were drawn back and 290 ones were valid;36 of the high school English teachers were interviewed),the author investigates 300 English teachers in twelve high schools of Luoyang(5 provincial high schools,4 municipal high schools and 3 ordinary high schools),aiming to study the following three questions:1.What is the current situation of high school English teachers' understanding of effective English reading teaching?2.What are the underlying problems of high school English teachers' understanding of effective English reading teaching?3.What are the reasons for the current situation?The results indicates: 1)for gender and variance,there is no significant difference in English teachers' understandings of effective reading teaching in high school,but their understandings are different owing to the difference in academic qualification and teaching experience.2)during the interview,although most teachers show their great attention to effective reading teaching and regard their reading teaching as effective and reasonable,yet the data reveal that there is a misunderstanding in teachers' understanding of effective English reading teaching,for their focus is on the knowledge of vocabularies and grammar rather than cultivating students' language ability and learning to learn,which results in teachers' self-satisfaction but unsatisfying effectiveness.3)high school English teachers' reading teaching strategies are relatively monotonous,showing that they lack the knowledge of the front and pioneering theories and discoveries in effective reading teaching.Based on the above findings,the author put forward suggestions such as teachers' professionalism enhancement,constant updating of education idea and optimizing reading teaching design,in order to promote high school English teachers' ability of effective English reading teaching.
