Intervention Study Of Social Work On The Plight Of The Elderly Losing Their Only Child

The elderly who have lost their independence are the unique groups that appear in the context of China's family planning policy.Existing studies mostly discussed the current living state and the implementation of national policies of this group from the macro level.However,how to meet their needs is seldom discussed.This study tries to use the basic ideas and professional methods of the social work to explore the ways in which social work can solve the plight of the elderly losing their only child and improve their quality of life.This study firstly analyzed the living conditions and needs of the 39 sampled elder in Area N of TongLing City and found that the plight of the elderly on pension,psychological and social support are the increasing pressure on pensions,depressing heart,psychological vulnerability and network breaks on social support.Based on this study,taking the case of the elder C as an example,and basing on the theory of social work's advantage perspectives and social support theory,the author took the intervention method of case work aiming at the issues of retirement,psychology,learning,and social support for the elderly.This method focused on the solving the problems that the service objects have on the loss of psychological comfort and network breaks of social support.After more than two months of intervention,the following results have been achieved:1.The psychological pressure status of the service objects has been significantly improved.After this intervention,the psychological status of the service objects gradually changes from tension,depression,vulnerability to extraversion and calm,which effectively helps the objects resolve psychological pressure,give emotional support,and restore their self-confidence to life.2.The service objects' social support network was reconstructed.The social support system of the service object is transferred from a single family support to the peer group and the formally supporting network to reconstruct and enhance the social support network of the service objects,and then discover and stimulate the ability and potential of the service objects to solve theproblem faced by themselves.Accordingly,the study concludes that social work can play a certain role in solving the plight of the elderly losing their,specifically as following:1.The case work method can formulate an effective intervention plan based on the actual needs of the service object,which can effectively solve the psychological and social communication problems faced by the service objects losing their only child.2.Adhering to the value concept of “helping others to help themselves” and under the guidance of professional theories,social workers can give full play to the role of resource linkers and link resources from various aspects to solve the specific problems faced by service objects.3.Social workers can fully play the role of policy advocates in the service process,advocate the government to purchase social service projects for the groups losing their only child,and call on the social forces to participate in the assistance of the families losing their only child.The deficiencies and shortcomings of this study are: First,the selection of service objects has a certain particularity;Second,the intervention method is single;Third,the social workers themselves lack of practical experience.
