The Research On The Effectiveness Of Urban Scale In Dalian

Since the reform and open, China has made remarkable achievements in urban development that city's rapid economic development has had a tremendous impact in both domestic and international community. But urban development not only should perform in terms of quantity, but also be reflected in quality that is the urban scale effectiveness. Urban scale effectiveness is referred to the mutual relationship between the city size factors and its economic and social benefits, which is an important category of urban economics. City size contains three elements of population scale, land scale and investment scale. The rapid expansion of urban population scale, land scale and investment scale has promoted the rapid development of urban economy and brought huge economic and social benefits to individuals and enterprises such as a diversity of goods and services. But the urban scale's main contradiction is also gradually revealed that low urban scale effectiveness, low space efficiency and urban population density is lower than in developed countries. After 30 years rapid development, China has many big cities. But compared with the world big cities such as New York, Tokyo, Japan and South Korea Seoul in foreign countries, there is still a big gap in the concentration of population and the scale of urban space and economies for China major cities. All those show that China's city size still has huge room for improving and urban scale effectiveness also has great potential to improve.Based on the previous research findings, this paper uses the Cobb-Douglas production function to study the Dalian Urban scale effectiveness in depth theoretical analysis and empirical analysis. And combined with the Dalian City statistics from 1994 to 2013, this paper has found a new standpoint of population size, land size and investment size to study the relationship between city scale and city benefits. Through demonstrating the contribution of population scale, land scale and investment scale to Dalian urban scale efficiency, we can estimate whether the Dalian urban scale efficiency exists and how is the urban scale effective intensity.The first chapter describes the background and significance, summarizes the present researching situation of urban scale effectiveness in both internal and external, and proposes the own research content, the basic framework as well as the innovations and inadequacies. The second chapter elaborates the economic analysis of urban scale, which is the theoretical basis of this paper. First, using the relative economic theory to explain how the population and investment impact the urban scale efficiency; then, using of the agglomeration economics, scope economics and associated economics to explain the performances and reasons of urban scale benefits; finally, using the externality theory to explain the presence of negative externalities will weaken the power of agglomeration economies, thereby reducing the overall economic effect of spatial concentration and urban scale efficiency. This shows that city size is not more larger, the urban effectiveness will be more higher. The third chapter analyzes the relationship between each of the population size, land size and investment size and urban scale benefits. The fourth chapter describes the construction of urban scale efficiency model, and uses the Cobb-Douglas production function to analyze Dalian city scale efficiency, which is the focus of this paper. It mainly analyzes the impact of population scale, land scale and investment scale to Dalian city scale efficiency, and provides the powerful data support in improving Dalian urban scale efficiency. The fifth chapter analyzes the specific status of foreign cities scale efficiency by comparing with china cities benefits and summarizes the learning experiences for improving the urban scale efficiency. The sixth chapter is the policy recommendations of this paper.Based on the results of model estimating of population size, land size and investment size in Dalian city scale benefits, this paper mainly provides the meaningful policy recommendations from the perspective of urban population policy, land using intensification, urban economic development and coastal economic belt construction etc. to improve Dalian city benefits.
