Technological innovation has become an important way for enterprises to obtain competitive advantage. More and more companies took technological innovation as a key strategy, innovation strategy and the corresponding effects had became core issues. Exploration and exploitation are two different technological innovation. Exploration chases for new possibilities, and it is a substantial and radical innovation. While exploitation is to improve the status, and it is cremental. Exploration will enbale enterprises to better adapt to dynamic environment,and then affect long-term performance.Exploitation will enable enterprises to better adapt to the competitive environment, and then impact short-term performance. There are a lot of studies about dualistic innovation, part of these studies are about how to balance exploration and exploitation, and others are about the impact factors of dualistic innovation. However, the way R&D resources allocate and use will impact innovation. Yet, few studies focus on the relationship between R&D intensity and dualistic innovation.On the basis of existing research, the paper will explore the influence of R&D intensity on dualistic innovation. On the basis of the technical innovation theory and upper echelons theory, this paper deeply analyse the influence mechanisms of R&D intensity on dualistic innovation, figures out the difference between the impact of R&D on exploration and exploitation, explores how characteristic of top management teams R&D intensity influence dualistic innovation, and raise the research hypothesis and model. The paper selects the invention patents of automobile industry in 2003-2012 as samples, applies descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis random-effect negative binomial regression models to analyse the sample data.The results indicate that R&D intensity has a positive and significant effect on dualistic innovation, and the higher the R&D intensity is, the higher the possibility for a firm to undertake exploitation will be; TMT average age?team age heterogeneity and team tenure heterogeneity positively moderate the relationship between R&D intensity and dualistic innovation; TMT size and average team tenure have negative moderating effects; whereas the moderating role of team tenure and team age heterogeneity between R&D intensity with dualistic innovation are not significant, and the moderating effects of average age on the relationship between R&D intensity and exploitation is not significant.
