Dendrobium catenatum Lindl, a tender perennial herb, its reproductive rates are very low under natural conditions and the wild resources of this species are on the verge of extinction. D. catenatum is listed as endangered species by the Regulations on the Protection and Management of Wild Medicinal Herb Resources and China Plant Red Data Book.D. catenatum, rich in polysaccharides, alkaloids, amino acids, microelements, phenols, phenanthrenes, stilbenes, sesquiterpenoids, steroids, coumarins and other ingredients, has the effects to inhibit tumor, enhance immune function, resist oxidation, lower blood glucose level and so on. It has a long medicinal history with well-known medicinal value and has a big gap between market supply and demand. With the development of plant tissue and cell culture technology, tissue culture techniques of D. catenatum is constantly mature, promoting the development of its artificial cultivation and being of significant to protect its wild resources and meet the market demand.Through field investigation, literature analysis, relevant authority website data, and survey of the D. catenatum industry development present situation, we found that artificial cultivation pattern of D. catenatum mainly includes: facilities bionic cultivation mode, understory simulated primitive ecological cultivation mode and potted plant pattern. The dominant one is facilities bionic cultivation mode, which accounts for a 90% market share but requires a large investment of land and money with low quality and low price. Compared with facilities bionic cultivation mode, understory simulated primitive ecological cultivation mode has irreplaceable advantages: conductive to the recovery of wild populations and improvement of ecological and economic benefits with high quality products, high price, and avoiding taking up farmland, which is one of the feasible methods to solve these problems.Investigation and analyses of the practicability of the understory simulated primitive ecological cultivation technology from the market demand, technology promotion, region, policy aspects, economic and ecological benefits indicate that the market demand of D. catenatum will continue to increase in future; understory simulated primitive ecological cultivation technology has been more mature, with technical advantages, including relatively simple cultivation daily management, less diseases and pests and so on; promotion area is wide, which is roughly about 113.58 million hectares and increase the additional income of about 10.15 billion; according with national policies of farmland and forest economy; having a very important significance in protection of D. catenatum and biodiversity of man-made forest.We can conclude that, relying on timberland resource, the understory simulated primitive ecological cultivation technology constructs a development model with ecological benefit, economic benefits and social effect results benefit, making a very important significance to take full advantage of natural forest conditions, which is suitable for the promotion in southern areas of Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River.
