Western Xia is a multi-ethnic country established by the DangXiang nationality in the northwest of China in the medieval period,its existence has had an important impact on historical development.However,due to the particularity of Western Xia characters and the lack of historical data related to Western Xia,for a nation founded by Buddhism the stupa has become its important historical and cultural carrier,it is the product of a certain era,region and nation.The study of stupas in the Western Xia period is a supplement and extension to related theoretical results and content,research and record of buried architectural culture,summarize the development and evolution of Western Xia stupas,and at the same time,the characteristics of the stupas and their geographical distribution in the Western Xia era under the multiple integration of Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism were analyzed.To varying degrees of destruction of existing stupas during the period,also hopes to provide basic information for rescue protection and excavation studies of themThe paper takes the development and evolution of the stupas in the Western Xia period as the starting point,first,collect and sort out relevant domestic and foreign literature and combine field investigations,investigate and study on 18 places almost 135 stupas which identified by archeology as Western Xia period,statistics on the status of the stupas and their distribution and important examples.Through the collection of existing literature,systematic analysis from the perspective of architecture,plane form structural features,decorative arts,and spatial forms of pagodas in the Western Xia period using an architectural perspective,building a complete research system.Later,from the perspectives of architectural history and culture,a comparative analysis of the pagodas of the Song,Liao,and Jin dynasties in the same period as Western Xia,summarize the characteristics,development context and causes of stupas in the Western Xia periodFrom vertical and horizontal studies of stupas in the Western Xia period,it inherited and carried forward the tradition of ancient Chinese pagoda architecture,after absorbing the multi-ethnic,multi-regional,multi-national stupa architectural style,formed its own unique stupa building system.Combining Song of the Central Plains,Liao,Jin of the Minority Regions,and Tubo of Western Regions with the aesthetics of the DangXiang People,Create rich types,full of regional and ethnic characteristics,it has distinctive characteristics of the times.It is an indispensable architectural heritage for the development of ancient Chinese pagoda architecture.
