As a visual graphic art, the form of paintings is the basic constituting element of painting language. In the field of painting, the ideological trend of the western modernism has abandoned the restriction of the traditional realism to pursuit an expression of art which is more subjective and horizontal. Various schools came into being due to the innovation and reformation of the forms. Chinese ink portrait paintings, an important art expression, shouldering the responsibility of inheriting, need to explore more techniques of expression and multilateral forms to follow the current values. Thus it is meaningful for Chinese ink portrait painters to study and borrow some modernist forms. By comparing Western and Chinese modern paintings, this thesis firstly analyzes the evolution and development of western modernist paintings, and then explores how Chinese ink portrait paintings study and selectively borrow the modernist forms. The aim of the thesis is to state the modernist exploring ways of Chinese ink portrait, and, what is more, the culture values and research significance of the study of art forms.
