Calligraphy in the early 20 th century, continued to the path of the late Qing Dynasty, and ended up with the inheritance and creation about the stele style of the Qing Dynasty adherent calligraphers. After the 1930 s, calligraphy went through the stele style in late Qing Dynasty, was getting out of the doldrums, and finally the emergence of calligrapher clusters with foresights brought the style of Calligraphy into a path that concentrating on the post style derived from Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi etc., at the same time, it formed a new calligraphy group in the new period unconsciously.Shen yinmo was the core person of the group, this group included many scholars and calligraphers in nationwide, Many of them were academics, cultural elite that had high literacy intellectuals, they had solid foundation of traditional knowledge and also had advanced ahead consciousness of new culture, they were called the“scholar-calligraphers”. They had conscious awareness on the question of the stele and the post, so that the calligraphy vision freed from the confusion of the stele, they learned the lessons from previous experience, revisited classic, distinguished rubbings, fully recognized the value of traditional calligraphy and accepted the spectacular phenomena about the stele since the Qing Dynasty. They advocated picking up the stele and the post at the same time, and thought their advantages should be learned to enrich their artistic outlook. They compatibled with an open mind and made the stele and the post developing, movement in art and new pattern thus formed since the late Qing Dynasty which was in the doldrums all the time, and calligraphy also went to a new round of historical height.Pan Boying is very important in this group, his talent and artistic standards were excellent in the group. He did his best for the group’s work and he always making friends with others that becoming an important figure in this group. The calligraphy of Pan Boying looks beautiful and marked as skillful techniques. His calligraphy style and calligraphy thoughts were consistented with together, were the revival of traditional orthodox calligraphy returned to typical Tang Dynasty. Pan Boying was a typical calligrapher and important figure in modern history. It has important significance exploring the art his calligraphy and calligraphy thoughts about. This thesis intends to comment and analysis Pan Boying’s calligraphy style and calligraphy thoughts from the perspective of calligraphy angle objectively, and reveal their values and significances for calligraphy’s development. This thesis is divided into four parts as follows:The first part is “Pan Boying and his calligraphic background”. This chapter introduces Pan Boying’s basic situation and cultural background. Pan Boying had a famous teacher who named Wu Kaisheng and a famous scholars, poets, lawyers named Zhang Shizhao. Therefore he had a solid foundation of traditional culture, laid the foundation for his cultural and artist. Pan Boying lived in an era of the 20 th century that is the rise of a new culture, art of calligraphy based on the traditional cultural order fully fermented and thrived since that, and into a new period finally.The second part is “the calligraphy of Pan Boying ”. This chapter focuses on Pan Boying’s studying context of calligraphy, and summarizes his calligraphy style. Pan Boying was impacted by Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Chu Suiliang, Sun Guoting, Zhao Mengfu and so on. And payed much attention on classicical. His calligraphy presents a traditional thy testimonies following, and handsome artistic style. Fully reflects Pan Boying grasping classic calligraphy and his horizon of expectations of calligraphy learning, which is the key to close to Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi.The third part is “Pan Boying ’s calligraphy thoughts”. This chapter reviews Pan Boying ’s calligraphy thoughts, contains his view and method about calligraphy. Pan Boying had distinctive calligraphy concept as follows : the return of calligraphy orthodox, the calligraphy pursuing about thy testimonies, againsted “division of the north and the south”, and “north south quote on the monument”. Pan Boying also raised calligraghy system theory of “strokes” as the core, and theory of widely sightseeing and bit taking and so on..The fourth part is “ the value and significance of Pan Boying for the development of modern calligraphy”. This chapter analyzes the unique value and significance of Pan Boying, bases on the sufficient quotation of Pan Boying’s calligraphy art and achievements. And also analyzes the importance of literacy for calligragher’s art accomplishment, reveals the positive impact of each other of the high level intellectuals, and then reveals the important role of external artistic environment for art itself.
