Yaksha is one of the Eight Devas to protect Buddha in Buddhism. Their figures were mostly painted at the bottom of Grottoes in the period from Sixteen States to Northern Zhou Dynasty. Their postures are primarily bold, unconstrained, straightforward, tough, intense and powerful, representing another distinguished dancing style of Bodhisattvas Dancing in sutras. They can even be considered the most typical female and male dancing images in Buddhism. This writing focuses on the sources of Yaksha, its various figures from frescos and related historic articles in order to provide reliable base for “Yaksha”, the Dunhuang Dance Drama I choreographed. It further analyses the “Yaksha” image in the Drama in order to recreate and present the image on the stage, natural and alive in accordance with the spirit of DunhuangDancing Culture. With this effort, I hope to contribute to the richness of male images in Dunhuang Dancing and provide reliable basis for further creation of Dunhuang male images in the future.
