College English teachers are the full-time English teachers in colleges and universities who teach college English with undergraduates as the language learners.The teachers have the professional knowledge in the field of English,and undertake the job of English teaching and researching.College English is one of the compulsory courses for the first-and-second-year students in colleges and universities with the characteristics of being public,general,impartable and heterogeneous,which results in the differences of the college English teachers from teachers in other fields of studies.Under the current standard of teacher evaluation and promotion,college English teachers are underprivileged.Meanwhile,English education is in the stage of transit,the teachers are faced with difficulties in their career development.The study of the career development of the college English teachers is of great significance for the teachers to refresh their motivations of career development,and maintain their activeness and effectiveness of career development.The analysis of the difficulties and the revealing of the reasons as well as the proposition of the solutions guarantee the better and farther development of the careers of the college English teachers.Questionnaires and interviews are used to analyze the difficulties in the career development of the college English teachers,with the findings that in the transition of college English education,the difficulties of the career development of the college English teachers lie in the aspects of teaching,academic research,self-recognition and promotion.The difficulties in career development also reveal some age differences.Difficulties in teaching consist of long teaching hours,extended working time and place,adaption difficulties of older teachers to new teaching technology and low evaluation from students on classroom teaching.Difficulties in academic research lie in poor guarantee of time and environment for research.Difficulties in self-recognition lie in the burnout out of multiple roles,confusion in roles in the transition,and the split roles of teaching and researching.Difficulties in promotion and development lie in the over-high standard of promotion,and the lack of professional development opportunities.The age differences of the difficulties include cognition of and satisfaction in work.Furthermore,the study of the causes for the difficulties of career development reveals that causes for the difficulties include individual factors,organizational factors and policy factors.Solutions for the difficulties in college teachers' career development consist of three aspects.Firstly,government needs to guarantee the development of liberal arts and the independent decision making right of the universities and the English teachers,establish the English teaching as one academic discipline and set up multiple types of teacher organizations.Secondly,universities need to understand the education policies flexibly,change the assessing mechanism of teaching and researching of English teachers,establish a fair,reasonable and multiple motivation system,and to establish systems to ensure the promotion and development of college English teachers.Finally,the college English teachers need to improvetheircareer qualification and change the philosophy of teaching and researching,establish reasonable career plan and apply self-reflection to ensuring the professional development.
