Since the Song Dynasty,the Chinese Flower and Bird painting was divided into a separated element of Chinese Traditional painting by the Imperial Art Academy Department,and it tended to depict the small and agile animals;which were common in daily life.At the meantime,a number of excellent cat-themed paintings and articles emerged in various styles on different carriers.To study the ‘Cat' element in the background of Song dynasty,the emergence and development of cat-themed paintings were analyzed by researching the origin and meaning of the ‘Cat'.By utilizing the method of multi-factors comparison,this study analyzing the art history and aesthetic feature of cat-themed paintings to reflect the social climate and cultural pursuit of Song dynasty.This study invested the cultural symbol of cat-themed painting as a special artistic representation,it represented the prosperousness of the upper class,and the luxurious vogue in the Song period.The literati created numerous articles to admire the ‘cats what catch mice' and to mock the ‘cats what do not catch mice'.From the aspect of the painting,by depicting the ‘Cat' selectively and realistically,the Song's literati expressed their respect to the beauty of the nature rather than admiring the personal characteristics.They defined the spirit of the nature by depicting its expression.This study discussed two different features of the cat-themed paintings in the Song period,the technique of stroke,ink,and composition;and the species,shape,dynamics,and demeanor of the ‘Cat'.To discuss the spirit of XieYi in Chinese traditional painting,this study invested the social meaning of the cat-themed paintings and the changing of Chinese Flower and Bird painting.Hopefully,this study may help the author's future creations from several aspects;which were selecting thethemes,cultivating the emotions,and creating the conceptions.
