Research On Qian Xuantong's Chinese Character Reform Thought In The Perspective Of Chinese Education History

Since Chinese language subject was set up as an independent subject in 1904, the history of Chinese language's education has recorded a lot of progress of itself and thread of its reform. In that large-scale Chinese characters' reform movement, Qian Xuantong hold the banner of "revolution of Chinese characters" bravely, which made a great contribution to Chinese characters' reform. With forward-looking vision, Qian Xuantong cleared the thread of the reform of Chinese characters. He devoted all his life to the reform and gained a mass of achievements.The alphabetic writing of Chinese characters and the cut of Chinese characters' strokes provided an important reference for the after reform of Chinese characters. By adopting literature and comparative research methods and gathering research materials related to this subject, this paper found firsthand materials about Qian Xuantong's attitude and proposition of the Chinese characters' reform, which provides the theoretical support for this thesis. Within the view of history of Chinese language's education, the author analyzes the direction and reasons of Chinese characters' reform, sum up and compare some of Qian's propositions such as advocating esperanto, calling for Gwoyeu Romatzyh, simplifying Chinese characters, and so on. What's more, this paper summarizes Qian Xuantong's Chinese characters' reform course. Based on the researches of the Qian Xuantong's thoughts about Chinese characters' reform, this paper finds out the development, veins and direction of the reform of Chinese characters, deepen readers' cognition for "alphabetic writing of Chinese characters" and "the standardization of Chinese characters", which has a certain theoretical significance and scientific value.This thesis is divided into four parts.The introduction part elaborates the studying origin, research status, selected topic's significance and research methods. The first part discusses Qian Xuantong's idea about Chinese character's reform in terms of the causes and direction of Chinese character's reform, confirms the instrumental position of Chinese characters and its object defects on its form, content and use, makes sure that the final direction of Chinese characters' reform is alphabetic writing. The second part is the main part, within the view of history of Chinese language's education, this part elaborated Qian Xuantong's propositions such as advocating esperanto, calling for Gwoyeu Romatzyh, simplifying Chinese characters, and so on. During the specific process, the author explores the presentation, spread and implemented effect of Qian's different propositions from the prospective of his ideological transformation. The third part discusses the merits of Qian's Chinese character's reform on the basis of the second part, rethinks the reasons of several reforms' failures.
