Translingual Practice written by Lydia H.Liu is a special book. This book is characterized by obvious interdisciplinary characteristics and an untraditional research thinking pattern which reconsiders the modernity of modern Chinese literature from the perspective of discourse practice. In this case heated controversial disputes have been aroused among domestic scholars. Aiming to completely interpret this book from an integral perspective this thesis primarily begins with the analysis of translatability and language equivalence questioned by Lydia H.Liu in order to reveal the historical process of translation with an emphasis on the initiative of language medium. As a matter of fact, "translingual" translation is proved to be an intertexual co-authorship practice activity rather than a one-dimensional activity decided by singular culture. Therefore translation is better considered as a place full of power struggle and a practice filled with interwoven powers. Another innovation is her reflection upon the relationship between new concepts and new words generated from the "co-authorship" of western and Chinese cultures and practical conditions of China among which the two parties shall be given equal consideration.Chapter One mainly introduces the concept of "translingual". The researches of Lydia H.Liu are actually historical process researches targeted at verified language rather than traditional translation researches. More importantly different from general translation history the word "history" here refers to the fragmented and inconsecutive history full of struggles in the eyes of post-colonism. Compared with post-colonism which centers around western countries Lydia H.Liu creatively investigates the emergence of new words from dual perspectives (domestic and foreign) on the basis of domestic practices in the first half of the 20th century. As a consequence "translingual" shall be interpreted from three aspects.Chapter Two mainly presents translingual practices. Classified into the analytic category translingual practice can only be analyzed in concrete situations. Therefore based on the most controversial theme- nationality theory this chapter explores the way of understanding the concept "words construct reality" pursuant to the translation of the word "nationality" as well as the ambiguous medium function of Chinese scholars. In addition such practices are required to be two-sided. On the one hand language practices shall be investigated through multiple historical relations among which western cultural pressures and domestic factor interaction are involved. On the other hand,it is necessary to analyze the "discourse construction of contemporary China" especially the parodic imitation and productive distortion in Chinese literature. Only practices containing above two aspects can actually participate in the history and push forward the emergence of new historical events namely the new contemporary literature.Chapter Three delineates translingual expression mode in contemporary literature and construction of nationalism and culture. Taking free indirect speech creation of psychological and psychoanalysis novel as well as analysis of three novel expressions derived from the first-person text with directive function for example it aims to discover how this imported approach is modified to construct or express modern experience of China. While construction of nationalism and culture mainly examines how institutionalized literary criticism and classics in contemporary literature obtain legal or authoritative position.Finally it summarizes the innovation points and features of translingual practice put forward by Lydia H.Liu and summarize the modernity construction of modern Chinese literature from national character discourse, heteroglossia discourse, desire discourse, gender discourse and modern critical discourse. Simultaneously points out deficiency to be improved in the conclusion section.
