This thesis discusses a large number of writers who were named "Root seeker" around 1985 and their writings. The author intends to discuss the historical context, relevant argumentation, major standpoint, textual practice and value significance of the discourse from its own perspective.In the first chapter, the author conducts a description of the clues, social and historical context and major literature standpoint of the development of the "seeking root discourse", also the comparatively representative criticism in the argumentation. In the second chapter, the author studies the cultural recognition crisis of the "seeking root discourse" in the historical context of the worldwide culture hegemony. Through the recognition units such as region, history, culture and language, the author sets up the unity of national culture and cultural subjectivity and rebuild the cultural assurance of stepping forward with the world. The author, in this chapter, defines the "seeking root discourse" as the discourse practice in the "national culture recognition and national subjectivity construction" in 1980s in China. In the third chapter, also the last, the author makes, through the narration of the urban and country, an analysis of the construction of the scopes between modernism and tradition, history and ethics, enlightenment and aesthetics of the "seeking root discourse" in a historical context of modernization and modern general scheme, together with a critical construction. Also, the author tries to seek out a solution to the modernization crisis through the balance and inter-restriction between modernism and tradition, history and ethics, enlightenment and aesthetics. However, the "seeking root discourse" is defined in this chapter as the discourse of "reflective modernity". These reflections and constructions of "seeking root discourse" are of a vital significance in our reflection on the social and historical development in the global system.
