Substitution, one of the six categories of Chinese characters, has been argued in academia since long time ago. In Qing dynasty, a period that links the preceding and the following, Substitution inherits the essence from Song, Yuan and Ming dynasty. Besides, it lays the foundation of the 20th century's and the current research for the development of classical phonology makes it more scientific. Academia usually focus on the view of Substitution from "Shuo Wen -four masters" and a little from a book that covers the six categories of Chinese characters. However, academia focuses little on a specific literature that studies this kind of subject. Hence, the paper will study nineteen literatures in "Shuo Wen Jie Zi Gu Lin" and figure out the points of view in these literatures. Further, the author will make a comparison among these points and present a subjective and fair assessment to provide a reference in studies of Chinese Philology.Introduction:First, show the purpose of the selected topic. Then narrate the research achievement of Substitution and all the six categories of Chinese characters from Han to Qing dynasty and point out the lack of focus on this subject. Second, the current research status is introduced. Finally, illustrate the research method of the paper from three respects.Section 1:Analyze the relatively short literatures in nineteens' recorded in "Shuo Wen Jie Zi Gu Lin". Introduce the authors first, and then quest the principles and viewpoints of every author and give particular and detailed descriptions. Finally, assessments to each viewpoint are concluded.Section 2:Compare the viewpoints in these literatures from five respects, including the origin, the direction for use, the definition and the examples of Substitution and assessments by other scholars. Meanwhile, trace the origins and make clear of the evolvement of the subject with the research from scholars in Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasty.
