Chinese Characters Old And New Configuration Theory Discrimination

Chinese character, as one of the oldest characters in the world, has its own traits, one of which is that there is a relation between the shape and the meaning of Chinese character. Long long ago, the ancients had noticed it, and the theory of Chinese character-formation appeared.The earliest and wholest theory is the Six Categories which was put forward by Xu Shen in Han Dynasty. He classified the 9353 Chinese characters according to the relation between the shape and the meaning of those characters, which was pictographic characters, self-explanatory, associative compounds, mutually explanatory characters, onomatopoeia, phonetic loan characters. The scholars in the history had carried on research the Six Categories of Xu Shen. The result of the research showed that there were scientific points, and there were also deficiencies in the Six Categories, In my paper, the Six Categories of Xu Shen and the research of the scholars were called the traditional theory of Chinese character-formation.The object which the traditional theory of Chinese character-formation analyzed was Xiao Zhuan. With the new material of the ancient writing appearing, and with the Chinese character changing, people found that the traditional theory of Chinese character-formation was not enough. So in the early of 20 century, there were some new theories of Chinese character-formation. Such as the Three Categories, the new Six Categories, and so on.There were many theories of Chinese character-formation, which increased much difficult when normal persons used the theories. So the paper was classified two parts. It used full and accurate ancient writing, and studied thoroughly the traditional and new theory of Chinese character-formation., which paid attention to show the relation and difference of them.
