Liang Kai is an artist being rich in innovative spirit of Southern Song in Chinese painting history. He absorbed the nutrition of predecessors'paintings and integrated Zen Ideology, factors of literati painting and his fearless courage together, then broke the shackle of traditional painting powers and rules, leading a road of freehand painting by splashing ink and abbreviating brushwork, which made the modeling in the figure paintings been simplified by cutting out the superfluous and focused more on the expression of the painter's subjective mood and the expressiveness of the ink. This gave new vitality to the development of Chinese figure painting. It was not a-single-day work for what Liang had achieved in painting. Observing Liang's existing works, it can be seen that his artistic realm rooted in the tradition and based on deep and long-term study of tradition; then resulted from his love of painting and art practice, which together established his outstanding position in painting history. Although Liang Kai was an artist of Academy, he showed contempt for the dignitary and couldn't be restricted by rules of etiquette and the Academy's painting style because of his wild character. With his own painting practice, he set up a landmark for the later generations and deeply influenced the later development of painting.This thesis will discuss Liang Kai's artistic achievement and influence on later generations in five chapters. The introduction part will mainly introduce the research situation on Liang Kai and the innovative points and importance of this study. The first chapter will talk about Liang's life, the era he was in and the causes of his painting style. In this chapter, the first part will make a deep analysis of the social environment and the development of then painting circles based on the social background and beginning from the social cultural background and the development status of painting circles. The second part will turn the focus to the causes of Liang Kai's painting style and reveal the close relationship between literati painting, Zen Ideology, the development of Nature Adoration in calligraphy and the causes of Liang Kai's painting style. The second chapter will mainly analyze Liang's works, from which his artistic style can be summarized. The third chapter will discuss the inheritance and development of tradition that Liang Kai has made in the practice of painting. And there are two lines, the first is shaping figures by lies as the tradition did; the second is the skills of splashing ink that appeared in the landscape painting after the mid Tang dynasty. After it there will be interpretation from Liang's breaking the convention. The fourth chapter will elaborate the extensive influence that Liang Kai's painting art has on the later generations.This thesis, through the elaboration of the above five parts, is aimed at make a comprehensive interpretation of Liang Kai, thus bringing some inspiration to today's sophisticated and pluralistic painting environment.
