Survey Report On The Professional Status Of Freelance Interpreters

The understanding of the interpreters' occupational condition plays a significantly guiding role in interpreter training and interpreting teaching.This survey is conducted by means of questionnaire which is designed and distributed through the Internet.Freelance interpreters are chosen as the subject due to their market activity level.The respondents are from various areas,which makes this survey representative.The questionnaire contains the freelance interpreters' age,gender,education background,workplace,working situations,the problems they are facing,expertise,the freelance interpreters' suggestions for interpreting teachers and students and their advice on interpreter training and interpreting teaching.Statistics of the questionnaire show that the freelance interpreters are facing problems as follows: huge pressure in occupation and competition,difficulties of rights protection and lack of occupation sustainability and social security welfare.After analyzing,some valuable suggestions on interpreter training and interpreting teaching are put forward: interpreting learners should improve their skills in all aspects,participate in various interpreting practices and enhance their sociability;the universities should provide more internship,offer diversified optional courses,adopt practical teaching materials and cooperate with enterprises to cultivate interpreting talents.
