A Practical Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Social Science Works "Culture And Life" (Excerpt)

Culture and Life is one of the masterpieces of He Lin,the famous representative of China's modern new Confucianism.Among the 42 writings about culture and life in this book,The New Development of Confucianism was finished in 1941,which is an essay mainly manifesting He's thoughts of new ideology of mind and bearing profound ideological connotation of Chinese culture.That is why the essay has been chosen as the source text of translation.And the essay has posed great difficulties in translation of four-character words,of quoted classical Chinese and that of those sentence characterizing half classical Chinese and half vernacular Chinese.Accordingly,based on specific Chinese grammar of four-character words,the translator has classified all those words and then concluded the relevant translation methods and skills of them in detail.Regarding to the translation of the quoted classical Chinese,the translator has made related discussions on the sentences with multi-translated versions and such sentences whose translation has not been found yet.While for the translation of the words with half classical Chinese and half vernacular Chinese,the translator starts with the translation of the sentence structure in common use and empty words,further to introduce the specific translation examples.That is how the translator tries to help others to seek enlightenment and reference in this paper when they are translating texts of the same type.
