Anthropological films are documentaries that people shoot to study anthropology and embody the results of anthropology. It is an important means of cultural heritage and protection, and it is also a "visual culture ambassador",across the two areas of science and art.Although all countries have produced many excellent anthropological films, research on the classification of anthropological films is in the initial stage.Basically, there are no complete writings or works about the theory of anthropological films. Most existing articles or views are scattered, resulting in the theory behind the practice. In order to fill the shortcomings of anthropological film-related research, this paper tries to find out the classification of anthropological films from the evolution of the times on the basis of drawing lessons from previous research results, and then discover functional values of anthropological films from these categories. This paper also tries to make a comprehensive and scientific combing of anthropological films, and attempt to provide a scientific basis for the study of anthropological films, making it the bridge between the general theoretical research of visual anthropology to deep exploration of it,laying the foundation for systematic research of the visual anthropology. At the same time, the study can also set different types of norms for the production of anthropological films, and provide appropriate theoretical guidance for film creation and shootingThe introduction mainly introduces the background, purpose, significance and research methods of anthropological films classification. The literature review sorts out and summarizes studies of classification of documentaries and classification of anthropological films, explaining the concept of them and summarizing their respective research statuses from a macro point of view with time as a clue.In addition,it organizes the creation trajectory of documentaries and anthropological films, which provides a theoretical basis for the discussion of related needs of different anthropological film production.Chapter two introduces the concept of anthropological documentary, which is divided into two parts: anthropology and documentary and discussed respectively.Although the anthropological documentary is derived from two noumenons,we can not see it as a simple sum of both. The anthropological documentary has the uniqueness that the two do not possess.Next, this chapter introduces the distinction among ethnographic texts, general documentaries and anthropological films. The relationship between anthropological films and general documentaries is the relationship between part and the whole.Anthropological documentary belongs to the branch of the documentary and is a very special type of documentary. In the second part of this chapter,I also summarize three functional values of anthropological filmS,which are manifested in the record of intangible cultural heritage, the research and protection of human culture, and the exchange and dissemination of national culture.Anthropological documentaries have received worldwide attention with their high record value and national characters. In the visual aspects, anthropological film has great advantages in the spread of national cultural customs with its strong or iental charm. Thus,it is an important medium of dissemination of the Chinese minority culture.Chapter three mainly reviews the history of the classification of anthropological films.Different anthropological films have different functional values.Types and functions complement each other.Types can be divided according to the function and the function can be effectively played by the type. Therefore, the classification and function of research on anthropological films has been the focus of scholars' attention from the birth of anthropological films. This chapter not only introduces the early classification of anthropological films, analyzes shortcomings of the previous classification and works out the reasons of these shortcomings, but also summarizes the early classification of functions of the early anthropological film classification. In order to promote the development of C hina's film and television anthropology, combined with the problems of classification of anthropological films,we also need to reflect on the following three aspects, first, the denial of the mainstream anthropology;second, the lack of scientific and rational classification system;third, the separation of theory and practice.Chapter four explores the modernization of the classification of anthropological film. For all disciplines, classification is extremely important.Scientific and reasonable classification is an important basis for people to carry out scientific exploration. From the perspective of disciplines development, classification is a bridge of the transformation of a discipline from the general theoretical research to the special object research, and also a basis of a more systematic study of a discipline.Although the previous scholars have done the classification of anthropological film to some extent,it is still difficult to find a comprehensive, systematic classification method of anthropological film that can be accepted by most people, whether international or internal. This situation not only affects the deepening of the research on anthropological film theories, but also puzzles the practice of research, protection, production and display of anthropological films. This chapter classifies anthropological films according to their genres, functions and other aspec ts,then investigates the effects of the classification combined with their genres, giving new exploration to the classification of anthropological films, based on the classification principle and some other classification methods by studying the historica l classification methods of anthropological films, combining with the development characteristics of the current anthropological films, and taking the evolution of times as a clue. This is the first time for the classification of anthropological films to b e sorted out and highlighted their characteristics, revealing the internal relations between the types of anthropological films and their functional values, which provides a new theoretical guidance for the research and production of anthropological films, increases the depth of the study of anthropological films classification, and provides a new perspective to construct the classification system which is scientific, normative and conforms to the current research and practice of anthropological films theor y.Chapter five mainly discusses the future development trend of Chinese anthropological films. The number of audiences of anthropological films is quite large in the world, especially for excellent, ingenious, novel and innovative anthropological films. They have a broad market prospects. However,China's domestic market share of anthropological films is very small, compared with the US domestic market share. In order to change the market situation which is not conducive to the development of anthropological films,C hina's anthropological films are trying to move in the direction of marketization under the premise of maintaining scientific nature. There is no doubt that this kind of market-oriented exploration will give birth to more types of anthropological films. At present, the development of anthropological films has shown a diversified trend, which is bound to lead to the emergence of new varieties of anthropological films. Therefore, while sticking to the core principles of the scientific nature of anthropological films,we endeavor to explore and try research practice and shooting practice of all kinds of anthropological films, which has important practical significance and far-reaching strategic significance whether for the theoretical guidance on the production practice of anthropological film itself or for sustainable development of film and television anthropology.
