The prosperity of music in Tang Dynasty enjoyed world reputation.As historical rules everything observes,it is all the same with music in Tang Dynasty,which has inevitably experienced ups and downs in the evolution process of music in Tang Dynasty.and the causes of the evolution are of particular intricacy.China's music historians generally believe that the reasons that music in Tang Dynasty music were able to achieve the heyday in history had to do with national unification and harmony,the overall national strength,economy prosperity,ethnic harmony,exchange of multi-ethnic culture as well as rulers' stress on music culture and so forth.Its flourish and declining were a result from these reasons.This paper probes into the relations between music and emperors--the supreme rulers in Tang Dynasty.The advancement of music in the Tang Dynasty was inseparable from favorable social conditions,and it could not either do without support from the highest rulers of feudal society--emperors,who had supreme authority.Emperors in Tang Dynasty were born to be royal in the "music family"--rare in other dynasties.Although they are not main figures that advanced music progress,they had particular preference for music and attached great importance to it and they adopted policies for it as well.Under the feudal society system,emperor symbolizing power inevitably affected to a certain extent the development of music in Tang Dynasty.The writing of this paper will take the time as a main line,document literature as theoretical basis,emperors of Tang Dynasty as the research object.As for the layout of the article,it falls into introduction part and the five chapters.The introduction part mainly focuses on the object,significance,status quo,method of the study and so on.The first four chapters elaborate emperors' affection for and being adept at music and advocating of it in Tang Dynasty are described and summed up in a comprehensive and systematic way.The fifth chapter expounds the influence on and contribution to the progress of music made by emperors in Tang Dynasty.One part of this chapter further explores the pros and cons of the impact brought by emperors;the second part probes into contributions to music made by emperors in Tang Dynasty so as to enable readers to better understand music in Tang Dynasty in an object and all-round manner.
