The Qing Dynasty was the last feudal dynasty in our history. It inherited the former dynasty and promoted the final high-speed development in the political, economic and cultural fields in feudal society. At the same time, the Qing Dynasty also sum up and enhance the ancient Chinese food culture, making the imperial diet during the Qing Dynasty reached the peak of the ancient successive dynasties.Based on the historical materials and the memoirs of the late Qing Dynasty, this thesis summarizes the gains and losses of the imperial diet in the Qing Dynasty by using the knowledge of modern medicine and nutrition. The full text is divided into five parts, including the overview of imperial diet in Qing Dynasty, the advantage of the imperial diet, the disadvantage of the imperial diet, the three determinants which form the Qing Dynasty imperial diet and the article conclusion. The main research object is the characteristics of the imperial diet of the royal family members of the Qing court, trying to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the daily diet of the royal family members through the modern medical and nutritional point of view, and through the medical files to analyze the dietary preferences of different rulers resulting in different physical health conditions, finding the cause of their longevity or illness. We can find a pair of contradictions after a careful analysis of the imperial diet in Qing Dynasty. On the one hand, the imperial diet has many advantages, such as an adequate intake of dairy products, miscellaneous intake of grains and beans,to eat vegetables and fruits in the right season. The emperors tried to make themselves healthier and control the world in a longer term through this diet method. On the other hand, the daily imperial diet also has many disadvantages, such as long-term intake of high-sugar,high-calorie foods, large consumption of food which contains high protein, high fat, high cholesterol, consumption of stale food for a long time, which became one cause of the disease of those emperors and other royal family members.Through the analysis of the phenomenon of ‘gains and losses' in the imperial diet,we can find the three decisive factors which form the imperial meal, the continuation of national traditions, the constraints of the hierarchy and ritual system, and the dominant position of emperors.Contemporary people are in the democratic society under the rule of law and in the condition of market economy, our behavior has no longer been subject to feudal rituals and national traditions.Chinese concept of daily diet became much healthier in recent years, but there are still some people who continued the poor eating habits, which resulting in various sub-health and chronic diseases problems. This article discusses the “gains and losses” of the imperial diet in Qing Dynasty, which is to let people pay attention to the relationship between dietary nutrition and health. We should discard the dross while assimilating the essence of the imperial diet and guide the contemporary people to form the correct and healthy ideas which meet the modern medical recommendations. We should improve our body nutritional status and health level through the daily balanced diet to achieve the purpose of “using dietary method to prevent and to be part of the treatment of many diseases”.
