The Rules of Liu Shu is a book by Wu Chengshi,a writer of the Republic of China.Liushu is the main research content of this book,the full book is divided into three parts,there are the general outline,discussion of category of Liushu and separate discussion of phonogram.There are 1233 Chinese characters in this book,and the entries of Chinese characters are before the words.Then,the writer put the quoted passages of Shuowen.And WuChengshi's note attached to the end respectively.The book begins with a preface.The first part is introduction and describe WuChengshi's claim.The second part is the main body of this book,conducting a detailed analysis of all types of Liushu The main thrust of the book is interpretating WuChengshi's Liushu.This book is of great value to the study of etymology of Chinese characters.This paper analyzed all of the entries in The Rules of Liu Shu and it is divided into five chapters.The introduction includes three aspects.Section one is a brief introduction to the origin of the selected topic.This section introduces the reasons for choosing the topic from four parts.Section two is the current academic circles on The Rules of Liu Shu based on the present research situation and trend.Section three is the research objective and research methods.The first chapter is the brief introduction of the writer and The Rules of Liu Shu.This chapter is divided into three sections.Section one introduces the author's life and works.Focus on the achievements in the field of Chinese characters,the paper combs WuChengshi's research achievements.Section two is the writing purpose,reasons,basics and versions of this book.Section three describes the style of bibliography,the style is divided into choreography style and commentary style.Commentary style includes point statement,annotations and characters.The second chapter is the study of Shuowen in this book,including four sectioa The first section is WuChengshi's summary of Liushu.In this section,the first is WuChengshi's understanding of the order and definition of Liushu.Influenced by scholars in Qing Dynasty,WuChengshi followed BanGu'order and XuShen's definition.And Wu distinguished pic to graph,self-explanatory,associative compounds and phonogram according to origin of Chinese characters,and mutually explanatory and phonetic characters are not described in detail.Wu made the difference between Wen and Zi clearly.The second section is pictograph.The first part is definition of pictograph.Wu considered that pictograph record things by using graphics.The second part is classification of pictograph,Wu divided pictograph characters into three categories:Independent pictograph,compound pictograph and provincial pictograph.Only the independent pictograph is divided to similar categories.The third section is self-explanatory.The first part is definition of self-explanatory,Wu's opinion is that self-explanatory record things by unreality.The second part is classification of self-explanatory,there are also three categories:Independent self-explanatory,compound self-explanatory and provincial self-explanatory.The last section is associative compounds.The first part is definition of associative compounds,Wu considered that associative compounds is the combination of two or more independent characters.The second part in forth section is classification the classification of associative compounds,there are two categories:pure associative compounds and miscellaneous associative compounds.But there is not specific explanation of miscellaneous associative compounds.The third chapter is the development view of Chinese characters in The Rules of Liu Shu.This chapter summarizes Wu's contribution to the study of Chinese characters.The first section is attaching importance to repeated words.Wu paid attention to the development and change of words,and he study Chinese characters in a dialectical way.Sorting and listing these repeated words is one of the content.The second section is change of Chinese character.Wu can recognize the two laws of the development of Chinese characters are Simplicity and unify.The third section is Inheritance of Chinese characters theory.This section focuses on the theory of Zhang Taiyan and his d:isciples.And it also includes comparison with other theories.The forth chapter is the achievement and limitation of The Rules of Liu Shu.This chapter is the summary and evaluation.The first section is achievement,including four aspects.The second section is limitation,including three aspects.
